Having just completed his sophomore season on NBC’s hit comedy My Name Is Earl, actor Jason Lee will be represented on screens this summer as Underdog in the film of the same name. Between this and his work as the evil Syndrome in The Incredibles, Jason is having a great time voice acting.
VOICES FROM KRYPTON: What approach did you take to voicing Underdog?
JASON LEE: They wanted it to be me, really, so I just did my own voice for the most part.
VOICES FROM KRYPTON: I know this sounds goofy in terms of a dog, but how did you see the character? In other words, what kind of personality did you want to give him?
JASON: I wanted to make sure that he was a bit of jokester with a sarcastic edge. It was more fun that way, to give him that kind of attitude, and it gave his friendship and rapport with Jack [his young master] an old friendship feel. There’s a great back-and-forth there between the two.
VOICES FROM KRYPTON: Had you been a fan of the original cartoon from the 1960s?
JASON: Definitely a fan, but I made it a point not to watch it because I didn’t want to imitate anything, but I loved the original cartoon as a kid.
VOICES FROM KRYPTON: Any disappointment in the fact that a real dog was being digitally manipulated rather than a CG version of Underdog that resembles the cartoon?
JASON: It’s good this way, because a real dog is a little easier on the eyes than a “fake” version. And it’s a bit more tangible and real.
VOICES FROM KRYPTON: Did you record your dialogue alone or with your co-stars?
JASON: Mostly alone, but I did get to do a bit of voice over with Amy Adams, which was fun.
VOICES FROM KRYPTON: Is there something appealing to you about providing the voice for a character rather than being in front of the camera?
JASON: Voice over work is fun, because you only have your voice to work with, to express the character with, so you have to have a lot of energy and be creative and keep the character real and alive while only using your voice.
VOICES FROM KRYPTON: What appeals to you about this film’s storyline?
JASON: It truly is the story of the underdog, which a lot of us can relate to; having to come up in the world and prove yourself.
